Kindle DX comes with the larger screen is a definite plus. I use the larger type size on my Kindle 2, and at kindle dx type size I get far much text per page on the DX. On a side note, the larger screen also makes it possible to read poetry on the kindle reader, even at large type sizes. On earlier Kindles, the smaller screen cut off lines, so that you would lose the sense of when the poet ended the line. On the DX, you can see the whole line exactly as the poet meant it, with the cut-off in the right spot.
The PDF reader totality as advertised, and is extremely accessible. PDF documents appear on the DX exactly as they do on a computer screen. Moreover, you can drag and drop your documents directly to the device using the USB cable (or use the for-a-fee email if you absolutely must.) The only downside: at least for the documents that I’ve used so far, I cannot adjust the type size as I can with native Kindle documents.
The screen rotation also works as advertised: it operates as a mild zoom on both graphics and text and offsets slightly the downside of not being able to adjust the typesize on PDF documents. One good figure touch: the four-way guidance stick introduced on the Kindle 2 is rotation-sensitive, and leave relocation as expected relative to the display movement.

I like the increase in storage space, and don’t mind the lack of an external storage card. After a great deal of anticipation, Apple has finally unveiled their long awaited tablet computer. The name is confirmed as the iPad, which took some pundits by surprise – earlier guesses included iSlate, iTablet etc. – and it’s fair to say that it has received something of a mixed reception up to now. There is always a certain amount of polarisation where Apple is concerned and that’s pretty much the case here.
Some reviewers have suggested that it is nothing more than an oversized iPod Touch. Others are much more enthused and are forecasting the death of netbooks, notebooks and the Amazon Kindle e-book reader. The proof of the pudding is in the eating of course, and this will come when the iPad actually launches in March. It’s almost certain to be another success for Apple.
At the moment, the most commonly drawn comparison seems to be with the Amazon Kindle e-book reader. The two devices are really quite different – so comparing them may not be entirely valid. However, the comparison is practically unavoidable bearing in mind that Amazon’s Kindle has been the trendiest, “must have” gadget on the market for the last few months and was itself frequently dubbed “the iPod of books”.
Of course, the Kindle is a specialised device. It performs its primary function – allowing users to read books – very well and has a few supplementary functions, a basic web browser, a dictionary, receipt of newspapers and magazines etc., which it performs, quite frankly, less well. Conversely, the iPad is an extremely versatile multi-functional device, able to perform a wide range of different functions. Unlike the Kindle it has a color display, which features touch screen control functionality and incorporates an accelerometer. That means that it’s great for surfing the net, ideal for video playback, an mp3 player, an e-book reader and all of the entire library of “apps” developed for the iPod Touch will operate on it. Expect to see some pretty radical games appearing soon.
So should Amazon be worried that Apple is going to kill the Kindle reader off and eat into their profits? It seems improbable. Despite the hype, there is a significant price difference between the Kindle reader and the iPad. At $ 499, the entry level iPad price is a mere $ 10 above the current price of the Kindle DX. However, the entry level model does not incorporate 3G connectivity and there is a minimum monthly fee of $ 15 for the Apple device, which could rise to $ 30 dependant upon how big your downloads are every month. 3G connectivity is included in the Kindle package, with no monthly fee. It’s certainly possible that the launch of the iPad could force a price cut for the DX – but this was inevitable at some point anyway.
One of the apps that many will use on the iPad will be the “Kindle app”, which basically allows users to read Kindle books on their Pod or Pad. It may actually present an excellent opportunity for Amazon to increase the size of their potential market in this sector. Apple will also have its own online bookshop for iPad customers – so there may well some degree of price competition going forward. In this scenario, it will be the end users who benefit most.
When the iPad starts shipping in March, it’s a fair bet that a lot of enthusiastic customers will be making their purchases via the Amazon website. It will probably generate a very nice spike in sales for them.
So – Amazon will have the potential to increase the sales of Kindle books. It will also do very nicely as a merchant considering that the Amazon site will be the first port of call for many iPad buyers. The price of the Kindle DX will fall, which it would have anyway, but they will continue to sell in volume and Amazon will continue to profit. It just serves to underline how robust the Amazon business model is.

After what seemed, for many people, like a very long wait, Apple has finally unveiled their tablet computer. It’s been given the name of iPad and has, somewhat predictably perhaps, been given a mixed reception. Some say that it’s no more than an oversized iPod Touch. Others believe that it will sound the death knell for the notebook, the netbook and the e-book reader.
In particular, the iPad has, for some considerable time now, been hailed as the “Kindle Killer”. Which is, in one way strange as the Amazon Kindle and the Apple iPad are two very different devices, and yet, in another way, somehow inevitable. When the iPad starts shipping in March, they will be the two hottest gadgets on the market. Furthermore, they are brought to market by two of the largest and most successful corporations in the world.
The Kindle is extremely specialized. It performs one job, being a dedicated e-book reader, extremely well. In addition to being a great e-book reader it greatly simplifies the process of buying and taking receipt of books very effectively. On the other hand the iPad is a verstaile Jack of all trades. Its color screen is great for browsing the web, playing games, playing video and, of course, you can also use it as a music player and access the vast library of Apple “Apps”.
The Kindle is such a great e-book reader for a number of reasons. One of the most important is its e-ink technology display. This gives the user a reading experience which is really very similar to reading normal typed text printed on paper and is much more comfortable than reading on a back-lit LCD display. It also has a very low power usage requirement – so it can go for a long time in between charging. However, the e-ink display, which is a great strength for an e-book reader, is monochrome and relatively slow to refresh – which means that it’s pretty poor, or completely non-functional, for use as a web browser or video player.
The iPad’s great color display makes it ideal for use as a web browser, watching video or playing games. On the other hand, the back-lit screen produces more eye strain than the Kindle display and it has a relatively short battery life of only ten hours.
The fact is that the Kindle is far superior as an e-book reader to the iPad – but it is unlikely, even in its next incarnation, to ever be used as anything other than a backup web browser – suitable only for very occasional use. Apple’s iPad is very definitely a genuinely multi-functional device. Apart from its suitability for use as an e-book reader, there will probably be other specialist devices that perform some of its other tasks better. If you want a specialist device or if you feel that the increased versatility of the iPad is more than enough to compensate for less than ideal performance in all areas will be the determining factor in deciding which device you choose.
The iPad is, quite frankly, not a patch on the Kindle when considered as an e-book reader. However, even after its next iteration (due sometime early in 2010 if the rumours are true) the Kindle will not be suitable for anything other than very basic and infrequent web browsing. There may very well be other specialist devices which can, is selected areas, perform better than the iPad. The device you select will be determined by your readiness to trade off a (fairly) small amount of performance for a lot of versatility and the added convenience of a multi-functional device.

There’s a great deal of interest in electronic gadgets which perform a variety of different functions these days. Phones which have cameras, can browse the internet, play mp3 music files and even act as satellite navigation systems are splendid examples of these “fusion” devices.

The Kindle reader itself could be considered to be a multi-functional device. Over and above its primary function as an e-book reader, it can be used as a web browser. Admittedly, the functionality is somewhat limited, primarily due to its display which is monochrome and not suited to displaying video due to a relatively slow refresh rate.
On the other hand, it is the Kindle’s e-ink technology display which makes it so much more pleasant to read on than either the iPod or a computer screen. Due to the fact that it is not back-lit, it produces much less eye strain in use than using a standard LCD type of monitor.
Another benefit of e-ink technology displays is the fact that they only draw power when the screen is being refreshed. The significance of this is that e-book readers can go for lengthy periods on a single battery charge. When you think about it, it’s the perfect scenario for a mobile battery operated piece of kit. Typically, e-book readers can last for several thousand “page turns” between charges. For an average reader, that will represent something between four and six weeks of use.
So, the thing that makes e-book readers so very good for reading books on – the e-Ink display – is currently a limitation on their ability to perform other tasks, such as web browsing or video display. Perhaps in the future, color e-Ink displays will become available, with a faster refresh rate. Devices such as the Kindle reader will then become better internet browsers and media players.
In the meantime, based upon the fact that e-book readers are very much the hot gadget of the moment, it does look as if there is still a place for devices which do one job only. Just so long as, like the Amazon Kindle, they do that one job very well.

Both kindles have text to speech software which automatically turns all of your books into audio books. Yes, your Kindle will read to you!
Neither of these electronic reading devices have any monthly charges to worry about. The wireless service is provided a lot like the wireless for a GPS.

Amazon must be absolutely delighted with the performance of its Kindle reader family in 2009. The Kindle 2.0 was released in February and the DX followed in June. The Kindle very rapidly became Amazon’s top selling product – even before the international launch of the Kindle 2.0 in October.
The Kindle became Amazon’s “most gifted” product ever during 2009’s festive season and, on Xmas day 2009, Amazon sold more Kindle e-books than traditional printed copies. Of course, that was probably due to all those lucky people who had received a Kindle as a Christmas gift. It seems likely that, having unwrapped their gift, happy new Kindle owners would want to test their new toy. That would most likely have been done by connecting to the Amazon website and downloading a few Kindle books.
Nevertheless, selling more Kindle books than paperbacks and hardbacks is still a significant milestone. Even if some maintain that the method of realing this was just a little artificial then, when you think about it, that simply emphasises just what a good fit the Kindle is for Amazon’s business model.
Meanwhile, Amazon’s competition has been closely observing their success and taking steps to secure a share of the e-book reader market. The list of companies with e-book readers in development reads like a who’s who of consumer electronics multinationals. 2009 was, even by their own high standards, a very successful year for Amazon. A lot of the credit for that must go to the Kindle ebook reader family. The Kindle 2.0 and its larger sibling, the DX, have been a huge success for Amazon. The Kindle has quickly become Amazon’s top selling product.
At the moment, the Kindle enjoys a 60% share of the USA’s e-book reader market. The Kindle 2.0 recently launched internationally. Even if Amazon don’t achieve the same high level of success internationally – although it’s difficult to see why they wouldn’t – the increased size of the market is going to help Amazon to even better results in 2010.
There are some who maintain that a lot of the Kindle’s success up to now has been a result of a lack of genuine competition. Whilst it may be true that there weren’t many e-book readers around to go head to head with the Kindle, it would probably be nearer the truth say that the Kindle’s success was chiefly due to the fact that it was an innovative, market changing product.
There are certainly enough alternative readers available today – or due for release in the near future. The lengthy role call of competitors who either have their own readers on the market or programmed for imminent release is a clear indication of the level of growth which is forecast in the e-book reader market. Despite the fact that the market is new and is still in development, it has received support from a number of different sources – including the world of academic publishing and various political bodies. Rapid growth looks certain.
A further strong indication of the high level of growth predicted for this sector is the volume of third party goods available to accessorise, protect and customise ebook readers. The majority of these items are currently intended for the Amazon Kindle. If you want a Kindle cover, Kindle reading light or a spare charger then there are plenty of independent manufacturers ready and willing to meet your needs. Accessories for new readers, such as Barnes and Noble’s Nook and the Sony Daily Edition reader will gradually expand as their popularity grows.
Just as 2009 was a good year for Amazon, we can expect 2010 to see ebook readers in general become more and more popular. Amazon’s dominance will be challenged and increased competition will drive prices lower – perhaps to the point where such readers enter the mainstream consumer electronics arena.
According to many market analysts, a price of around the $ 150 mark is needed for this to happen. With the high level of competition in the market, it’s not outwith the realms of possibility that this price level may be reached in the course of 2010.
